Voice chat
Optional proximity voice, and how to set it up.
Talk out loud to people standing near you, instead of typing. Volume drops with distance, the way it does in a room. It’s entirely optional, and plenty of people here never turn it on.
Before you turn it onVoice is the one part of CloveSMP with no log. Chat can be read back when you report something; voice can’t. Assume anything you say out loud could be recorded by someone listening. Anyone pressuring you onto voice, into a group, or off to another app is against the rules.
How it works
| How far your voice carries | 48 blocks |
| How far a whisper carries | 24 blocks |
Groups let you talk to specific people at any distance.
Setting it up
Voice needs a small free mod called Simple Voice Chat. It takes about five minutes, once. It works on Java Edition only.
- Install the Modrinth AppA free launcher that does the fiddly parts for you: modrinth.com/app.
- Make a Fabric instanceIn the app, create a new instance on Fabric, on the same Minecraft version the server runs.
- Add Simple Voice ChatSearch the instance’s mod list for it and add it.
- Launch and join as normalA microphone icon appears in game.
Already on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt? Just add the mod to what you have.
Using it
Open the voice settings from the in-game menu, or with the key listed under Options → Controls. From there you can:
- pick which microphone to use
- choose push to talk (hold a key) or voice activation
- mute yourself
- mute one person, just for you
- make or join a group
Push to talk is the kinder option if you share a room with anyone.
It isn't working
| What you see | Fix |
|---|---|
| No icon at all | The mod isn’t installed, or you launched the wrong instance. |
| Icon with a line through it | No microphone is chosen. Pick one in the voice settings. |
| They hear you, you hear nothing | Check the volume sliders in the voice settings. |
| Still nothing | Your computer may be blocking Minecraft from the microphone. Check its privacy settings. |
Stuck? /report in game and someone will walk you through it.
